Wanting vs. Action
Guest post by Dr. Joanne Siebert, D.C.
My kids are older now, but when they were little, I would have them write out their Christmas lists so I would have ideas to give to family members. You could say this was a list of “wants” that, for the most part, would be miraculously fulfilled for them.
The goals we set for ourselves really come down to a list of “wants.” However, you have probably figured out that no one miraculously fulfills those goals for you. And if you get stuck in this type of thinking, you will not reach your goals.
So, how do we break through this type of thinking? The very simple answer is to take action. Massive action is preferred, but even if it is just one tiny step toward your goals, it counts.
Here are three success keys that will help you take consistent action to meet your goals:
#1 – Know your WHY
In chiropractic school, it was drilled into me – when the WHY is big enough, the how takes care of itself. Remembering and reaffirming WHY you are doing what you are doing will help you create and implement an action plan to reach your goals.
#2 – Create habits
Super successful people create habits that are non-negotiable. Habits combine the knowledge of what you want, your personal skillset and the desire within you for change. I highly recommend reading “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey. This classic success book is foundational in learning how to get what you want in life.
#3 – Accountability partner/Coach
One powerful way to accelerate reaching your goals is to find an accountability partner or hire a coach. When you make yourself accountable to someone else, you are more likely to follow through. Think about getting up and going for a run. If it’s cold outside, you may be tempted to skip it and stay under the covers, but if you are meeting a friend, you will likely drag yourself out there in spite of how you feel to fulfill your end of the bargain.
Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.
